Hot weather

Summer is almost here so it's time to think about protecting our dogs from the potentially deadly effects of the heat.

Never leave your dog in a hot car and, if travelling with your dog, ensure your destination is dog-friendly so he can get out for fresh air and to seek a shady spot.

Conservatories and caravans are not safe places to leave a dog either for, while it may be cloudy when you leave, if the sun comes out later, these places can become unbearably hot. Wherever they are, dogs should always have access to cooler, ventilated spots and do provide a weighted drinking bowl that can’t be knocked over. Carry water with you on hot days and give your dog frequent small amounts.

Grooming your dog will help keep him cool by ridding him of excess hair; long-haired breeds benefit from a haircut at this time of year.

Dogs, especially those with light coloured noses and ears, can suffer sunburn so stock up on pet-safe sunscreen. flynnthedog stocks this or see your vet.

Summer mornings and evenings out of the hot weather are the best time to exercise your dog.

And enjoy the brighter days!
